~ by Lin, Yu-Hua

I'm in Love

I am in love. I'm SO in love. I'm in love with someone who is much older than me [20 years older]. If you understand Chinese and read the Chinese poems I've composed these days, you can tell I'm in a relationship. People say those who are in love are poets.

Love was seeded in both of our hearts more than 1 year ago, but it didn't start to bloom until recently. It's just a beginning and I'm gonna cherish it, a (new) relationship starting from almost the end of 2006. And that will lead me/us into a HAPPY NEW YEAR OF 2007!

(給母親也給天 下所有的母親/for Mom and moms)

- by Lin, Yu-Hua

Tranquil

Eating your fill
makes you ill.
Taking a sleeping pill
makes you still.
What really fits your bill
is nothing but being tranquil. ~ by Lin, Yu-Hua~

America's Next ...

America's Next ... Top Model? No! We were talking about America's next president.

The following is part of my email message reply to one of my good friends in the U.S.:

(The content of the message is all about my personal opinion except for my friend's thinking Hillary won't win.)

I've heard that Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton are going to run together for president and vice presient. In that case, I'd vote for them if I were an American citizen. It seems that no matter what happened between them, they're still the best "couple" in politics.

You think Hillary won't win because your country is not that progressive yet. Hum..., interesting. People here in this small country, Taiwan, have been talking about a probable female president in 2008. There're two possible candidates: one of them openly expressed her willingness to run; the other never mentioned anything or said any word about it though many political pundits think she's going to run. Taiwan is one of the a few progressive countries in Asia, but not as progressive as the U.S. Let's see a female president will be in which of the two countries first. Taiwan, or the U.S.?

I think Condoleezza Rice is good, too. It'd be better if she were a Democrat.

Barack Obama's got charisma (at least on TV). I have very limited information about him. The media here didn't cover him much. You know about him better than I do.

A Friend Who's Always There

(from a forwarded email message to me)

If I could catch a rainbow
I would do it just for you
And share with you its beauty
On the days you're feeling blue.

If I could build a mountain
You could call your very own;
A place to find serenity,
A place to be alone.

If I could take your troubles
I would toss them in the sea,
But all these things I'm finding
Are impossible for me.

I cannot build a mountain
Or catch a rainbow fair,
But let me be what I know best,
A friend who's always there.

Don't Kiss Them Good-bye

One of my students lent me a copy of the Chinese edition of Don't Kiss Them Good-bye the other day. I was reading it and ordered a copy of its English edition online just now. I also found the author, Allison DuBois's website. I'll finish reading the Chinese edition in a day or two and look forward to receiving the English edition. Thank you, God (whatever people call you) for giving me this "God-given" gift: being bilingual. If I like a work very much and its original is written in English, I'll get a copy of its original eventually.

Allison DuBois, a medium who inspires the TV show "MEDIUM", reminds me of the two psychis I met last time I was in New York City. If I were there, I would pay them a visit. Currently My brother and his wife are honeymooning in the States. They are staying at my auntie's in Fort Lee, New Jersey. They don't understand English at all. I can't ask them to visit the psychis for me. That's too bad.

Anway, let me finish the Chinese edition first, and then the English original. Did I mention who lent me the book? Yes, one of my students, and she's a Buddhist nun.

"Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink.
But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love.
If you must steal, steal away from bad company.
If you must cheat, cheat death.
And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away."

one serious comment on the shrewness's blog

comment left on "the shrewness"' blog:

"i always think that death is painful for the living, not the dead. death leaves pain on the living, not the dead, but when i'm remided of (by myself) not knowing where i was before this lifetime, the pain is alleviated. this may sound philosophical, but i hope your pain will be alleviated when it is the time. ~yu-hua~ "

..............................................................
personally, i can only imagine that life after death (life after this current life) is probably like life before we came to this world ( life before we were born). i can not "remember" anything about life before i came to this world or life before i was born. therefore, there's no pain before and after this lifetime, supposedly.

whenever people or animals i know of or i am close to die, i "review" the above thought again and again. they (the dead) may not feel any pain. thus the pain on me is alleviated.

Traffic Cops without Driver's Licenses

According to The China Post (Page 20, Local, Thursday, October 26, 2006) , there are 33 traffic police officers with no driver's license in Ilan (Yilan) County. I don't know if every traffic cop here in Miaoli County has a driver's license, but I know what I will do when I'm asked to show mine:

Traffic Cop: Driver's licence, please.

Bad Girls vs Good Girls

Good girls loosen a few buttons when it's hot. Bad girls make it hot by loosening a few buttons.
Good girls only own one credit card and rarely use it. Bad girls only own one bra and rarely use it.
Good girls wax their floors. Bad girls wax their bikini lines.
Good girls blush during love scenes in a movie. Bad girls know they could do it better.
Good girls think they're not fully dressed without a strand of pearls. Bad girls think they're fully dressed with just a strand of pearls.
Good girls wear high heels to work. Bad girls wear high heels to bed.
Good girls say, ''Don't... Stop...'' Bad girls say, ''Don't Stop...''

Snake Bite

"I hope I'm not poisonous," said the first snake.
"Why?" asked the second.
"Because I just bit my lip."

Jimmy

Jimmy. His father, an African-American, stayed in Taiwan as a soldier during the Cold War. His mother is a Taiwanese. His father went back to the States before he was born. He has never seen his father and is looking for him. Oftentimes, Jimmy was discriminated against because of his skin color. But he's always as strong as his mother. He's also a drag queen playing Whitney Houston, Diana Ross and so forth.

I've seen Jimmy many times on different TV shows. He's stunning. He's so atrrative, especially (the expression in) his eyes.

stay away from cola, especially women?!

"Cola consumption had no effect on BMD [bone mineral density] in men." - Cola consumption linked to weaker bones, Taiwan News, 10/12/2006; Reuters

Whether the above statement is true or not, I'm sure I'll stay away from Coca-Cola because the price of one can of Coca-Cola here in Taiwan was raised from N.T.$18 (U.S.$0.5404) to N.T.$20 (U.S.$0.6004) earlier this week. (For more about this in Chinese)

Cola? No, not a sip, not even a drop! Stay away from me! It's both for the sake of my health and the price hike.

mad about mad hot ballroom

This past Sunday, I rented a movie DVD at Blockbuster. The movie title is “Mad Hot Ballroom”. Movies on ballroom dancing always catch my eye. I know nothing about ballroom dancing; even so, I enjoy watching movies on it.

“Mad Hot Ballroom” is a documentary mainly about fifth graders from over sixty public schools in New York City and a citywide ballroom dancing competition. It records the scenes of their practicing ballroom dancing and their dancing in the competition. Students and teachers share their opinions with one another on things both related to and unrelated to the dance competition. It is a touching movie, but it is not a sad one. It made me happy, especially when the music of “merengue” is up. Most of the pupils like to dance “merengue”. The teachers as well as the judges love it, too. What does “merengue” sound like? How do they dance to it? Why not rent the movie and get to know it yourself?

Oh, by the way, I would like to recommend you another good one about ballroom dancing. It is called, “Shall We Dance?”. So, open your eyes and look for them hard next time you are in a video rental shop.

book(s) recommended - how to meet and work with spirit guides

I am ...

I am ...
(written by Yu-Hua on June 30, 2006 at 4:30 a.m.)

I am an Oriental
who is natural
and sometimes sentimental.

I am also political
but not that radical.

Digging everything spiritual
rather than something material
is always my principle.

love is strange & i found a reason

that's me...

"Your Sample Reading:

How You Approach Life and How You Appear To Others
High-spirited, enthusiastic, and exuberant, you love adventure, change, exploring new territory, and are not happy confined to the same safe, familiar, secure little world all the time. You have a strong restlessness and yearning for something greater than anything you've yet experienced, and you often live in your dreams and visions for the future. You tend to believe that the grass is greener somewhere else and you like to keep moving, either literally or figuratively. Idealistic and optimistic, you always expect something better ahead. You love to have a goal, something to aim for, but once you achieve it you are on to something else. You are ever on the lookout for new opportunities and you are a gambler, willing to take risks and to break new ground. The possibility of discovering something new is what makes life interesting for you. You have great faith in life and bounce back quickly from disappointment and failure.

The Inner You: Your Real Motivation
You have powerful emotional attachments to the past, your family, your childhood, those places you associate with safety and security and your beginnings. Maintaining a connection with your roots and heritage and keeping family bonds strong are very important to you. Loyal, devoted, and sentimental, you tend to cling to whatever is dear to you, be it person, familiar place, or cherished possession."

'Dear Joseph,

the cute little albert

I just logged on to Angela's personal website and found that she had updated her photo albums adding her son's pics. Dr. Yu-Hui Angela Fu was one of my teachers in graduate school. I used to visit her website from time to time, but haven't been there for a long while.

Look at those pics; look at the cute little Albert (23 pages, 257 pics)! I'm so jealous. I wish I had a SON. I do have a SUN, a tattoo on my lower back though. The SUN on my lower back is about three years older than Angela's SON.

we all lie? all the time?

"Other finding from this and other researches: men lie no more than women, but they tend to lie to make themselves look better, while women are more likely to lie to make the other person feel better. Extroverts tend to lie more than introverts."

We all lie, all the time

........................................

I'm a woman. I'm an introvert. Most of the students from my different classes think I'm so outgoing and talkative in class. I love my work, passionately! That makes me a totally different person while working. Well, that's only when I'm in class. [As my family members, relatives, friends and I myself know,]I'm a very very quiet person in private.

Yes, I lie to make the other person feel better, and I seldom lie. ;-)

9 steps to be a boss

Luo, Man-Fei said...

“I often told the young dancers that if the joy of dancing is not the repayment of dancing (to you), then, stop dancing, ‘cause you’ll certainly be unable to go on dancing. We do it with passion, and that’s enough. We enjoy ourselves to the full, and that’s worthwhile.” [translated from Chinese to English by Lin, Yu-Hua]

“I think when you’re involved in something you really enjoy very much, you’ll be surprised that ten years or twenty years have gone by suddenly looking back on the past. You don’t think about why you didn’t 'make a decision' at that time. Actually, I have to frankly admit that first I didn’t make a 'life plan', and secondly I didn’t choose to be a dancer. I just look back on the past and find myself a dancer already.” [translated from Chinese to English by Lin, Yu-Hua]

your life path number is 4

true...
ture...
so true...

Your Life Path Number is 4

Your purpose in life is to build your vision.

You are practical and responsible. You work hard, knowing that there are no shortcuts in life.
You work for a better life for yourself and those you love, but you are not an idealist.
Trustworthy and honest, you also demonstrate great courage. People can count on you.

In love, you are a loyal and committed partner. You are the ideal spouse.

You don't give up easily, and sometimes you can be too stubborn and unwilling to change.
You also can be too conservative at times. You sometimes miss out on good opportunities.
Also remember that not everyone can work as hard as you, as disappointing as that is!

you play it cool

no, i'm not HOT.
i'm COOL.

You Play it Cool

You're not in your face, smokin' hot... and it's all by design
You have a carefully crafted cool persona, leaving everyone wanting to know just a little more.

happy mother's day, amber!

I picked out a card in a bookstore for Amber, a young mother and my associate before going to my class at 7:00 yesterday evening. She teaches in the classroom next to mine every Tuesday evening. We've seen each other for a couple of times.

This is what I wrote in the card:

"Dear Amber,
Nice Meeting you!
Happy Mother's Day!

(It would be embarrasing if I sent you a Mother's Day card. So, here it is, a card for a universal use.)"

...........................................

If you plan to say "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY" to your co-worker or friend by sending a card , you'd better pick out a PROPER one. Choose a universal card and write some greeting along with "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY" in it. That's it! That's all! DON'T SEND A MOTHER'S DAY CARD to her. :-)

Another GOOD way to kill time while taking a train

Last Saturday morning at 9:58 I got on a local train. Its next and final stop was Xin-Zhu, and so was mine. I noticed that the train was so crowded. Well, It’s a Saturday morning, not unusual. I looked around for a bit. Not after a long while did I find that there were 10 people or so looking out of the windows and drawing on blank sheets. Um…. They’re students. They’re attending a class on a train instead of in a classroom. My guess was right! One student told the teacher that somebody was absent, and then the teacher told another student to keep on working/drawing. I heard the teacher said she had a bunch of sheets with her drawings on. She drew whenever she’s in a car, on a train, on a bus, etc. She recorded what she saw quickly in this way on her way from one place to another/the other. She said she liked to do it when she’s sitting beside the driver in a car. That sounded cool! Instead of nagging the driver, have fun drawing! The student that I kept watching drew pretty fast. One sheet, one scene/picture. She’s tired of standing or drawing the moving scenes outside of the windows? She sat down and started to draw people in front of her. I was not standing in front of her, or I would probably ask her for that drawing. The train stopped at Xin-Zhu Station at 10:15. I headed to my 10:30 class. Where did they go? I didn’t know. But they inspired me. Maybe I should take some blank sheets and a pencil with me next time.

Sef-Expression?!

Call this self-expression? We express ourselves or (let) a large and global company express us for... for... us?!

"Our Asian cultural expert Tian tells us Adidas should expect a bit of backlash from the Asian community in reaction to a newly introduced line of sneakers called the Yellow Series. One particular shoe has the image of a buck-toothed bowlcut slanty eyed face on the shoe's tongue - not exactly the currently acceptable rendition of the Asian populace."
For more

"Some Asian-Americans are charging racism in the release of a limited-edition Adidas sneaker that bears an artist's image of an Asian man with bowl-cut hair, slanted eyes, pig nose and buck teeth. Asian-Americans say the offensive image, similar to ones used in anti-Chinese political cartoons in the past, perpetuates a negative stereotype of Asians. Meanwhile Adidas and the clothing manufacturer contend it's about art and self-expression." While a few critics call for boycotting Adidas, most want an apology. Meanwhile, Asian-American groups say the incident is a wake-up call. ``It's very sad and disturbing that in this day and age, this stereotype is coming from a large and global company like Adidas,'' said Vincent Pan, executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action in San Francisco. ``It says we still have a lot of work left to do.'' can't handle too many things/play too many roles at the same time

I emailed Vegtomato last night by saying that I had to "temporarily" say goodbye to it. From March 2005 to February 2006 I translated a long article each month for Vegtomato. In late Februay this year I did not submit/email the translated work to Vegtomato for its March edition. It's late March now. I did it again. I officially said goodbye (well, hope it's "temporary") to it last night. One thing is for sure: I was a vegan; I am a vegan; I will be a vegan.

I chatted with one of my co-workers at a (private) langauge school / bu-xi-ban a little bit about my being an English tour guide last year. That was really a tiring task. I lost some weight after each tour. But I enjoyed touring different places with people from all over the world. I sort of miss it now. I still received/receive phone calls or email from The Tourist/Tour Guide Association, R.O.C. to ask me if I had/have time for tours. Well, well, well, my schedule is full of various kinds of English lessons (TOEIC, GEPT, conversation, tutoring) to teach in different places. So, my answer is: I would like to, but I could not. Again, I hope I can do it again sometime in the (near or far) future.

Right now I am enjoying my teaching job VERY MUCH! I am enjoying being with all my students in class. They teach me a lot.

My next step? Well, the nearest one is to take the TOEIC test again and get a score higher than 935 (the score I got last time on February 26 this year). I would like to defeat the biggest enemy, myself again and again. To me it is like the circulation of "death and revival". Die, revive, die, revive, die, revive, die, revie ... . It is endless (and may or may not end when I finally leave the world). In this process, I hope each new Yu-Hua is better than the previous Yu-Hua.

By the way, what's my sign? Am an atypical/freak Cancer! :)
